Review Reply Kit

How to reply to a negative Google review as a painter

Painting work is judged by eye, so small flaws show up in reviews: drips, uneven lines, paint on floors or fixtures, the wrong colour or finish, and jobs that took longer than expected. Many complaints come down to expectations about prep and the number of coats.

A simple four-step reply

  1. Thank them and use their name. Even an angry customer took the time to write.
  2. Acknowledge the specific problem. Repeat one detail so readers can see you actually read it.
  3. Take responsibility for what's yours, or explain once, briefly. No arguing, no blaming.
  4. Move it offline with a real next step. Give a direct phone number or email and a named person.

Keep the reply short (three to five sentences) and remember who it's really for: the future customers reading your reviews before they call.

Frequently asked questions

Should a painter reply to every negative Google review?

Yes, ideally. A calm, specific reply shows future customers how you handle problems. Reply once, keep it short, and move the conversation to phone or email.

Can I get a negative review removed?

Only if it breaks Google's policies, for example if it's fake, off-topic, contains personal information or is from a conflict of interest. You can report it from your Business Profile. Being negative or unfair is not on its own a reason for removal.

Is it OK to offer a refund in exchange for removing a review?

No. Google's policies don't allow offering incentives in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review. You can still fix the problem. Just don't make it conditional on the review.
