How to reply to a negative Google review as a roofer
Roofing jobs are big, loud and expensive, and the customer can't easily check the work themselves. Negative reviews usually involve nails and debris left in the yard, leaks after the install, delays from weather, poor communication about the schedule, or disputes about insurance claims.
A simple four-step reply
- Thank them and use their name. Even an angry customer took the time to write.
- Acknowledge the specific problem. Repeat one detail so readers can see you actually read it.
- Take responsibility for what's yours, or explain once, briefly. No arguing, no blaming.
- Move it offline with a real next step. Give a direct phone number or email and a named person.
Keep the reply short (three to five sentences) and remember who it's really for: the future customers reading your reviews before they call.

1. Nails and debris left behind
Hi [Name], thank you for telling us. Nails in the driveway are a safety issue, not a small thing, and our crew should have done a full magnet sweep before leaving. We'd like to come back and sweep the yard and driveway again at no charge. Please call [phone] to pick a time. – [Owner name], [Business]
2. Leak after install
Hi [Name], I'm sorry to hear about the leak. That's the last thing anyone wants after a new roof. Your installation is covered by our [warranty] workmanship warranty. We'd like to inspect it as soon as possible and fix whatever caused it. Please call me directly at [phone]. – [Owner name]
3. Weather delays and scheduling
Hi [Name], thank you for your patience. Rain pushed back several of our jobs that week, but that doesn't excuse leaving you without an update. You should have heard from us the moment the schedule changed. We've since [change]. I'm sorry for the stress this caused. – [Owner name], [Business]
4. Hard to reach during the job
Hi [Name], you're right that you should have had one clear contact for the whole project. I'm sorry you had trouble getting answers. I'm reviewing your job now and would like to call you myself. If you prefer, reach me at [phone]. – [Owner name]
5. Insurance claim frustration
Hi [Name], insurance claims can be confusing and slow, and I'm sorry the process was frustrating. We can't make decisions for your insurer, but we can help explain the scope and photos we submitted. Please call [phone] and we'll go through it together. – [Owner name], [Business]
What not to say
- Don't discuss claim amounts, policy details or the insurer's decision in public.
- Don't dismiss a leak report. Always offer an inspection.
- Don't copy and paste the same reply on every review. Add one real detail each time.
- Don't offer a discount or refund in exchange for changing or removing a review. Google's policies prohibit incentives for reviews.

Frequently asked questions
Should a roofer reply to every negative Google review?
Yes, ideally. A calm, specific reply shows future customers how you handle problems. Reply once, keep it short, and move the conversation to phone or email.
Can I get a negative review removed?
Only if it breaks Google's policies, for example if it's fake, off-topic, contains personal information or is from a conflict of interest. You can report it from your Business Profile. Being negative or unfair is not on its own a reason for removal.
Is it OK to offer a refund in exchange for removing a review?
No. Google's policies don't allow offering incentives in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review. You can still fix the problem. Just don't make it conditional on the review.
