How to reply to a negative Google review as a plumber
Plumbing reviews tend to be emotional because the customer called you on a bad day: water on the floor, no hot water, a toilet that won't stop running. A negative review usually comes down to one of five things: the price, how long they waited, a repair that didn't hold, a mess left behind, or how the tech spoke to them.
A simple four-step reply
- Thank them and use their name. Even an angry customer took the time to write.
- Acknowledge the specific problem. Repeat one detail so readers can see you actually read it.
- Take responsibility for what's yours, or explain once, briefly. No arguing, no blaming.
- Move it offline with a real next step. Give a direct phone number or email and a named person.
Keep the reply short (three to five sentences) and remember who it's really for: the future customers reading your reviews before they call.
The most common negative reviews for plumbers
- The bill was higher than the customer expected, often because of an after-hours or emergency rate.
- The arrival window was missed or too wide.
- The leak or clog came back after the visit.
- Water, debris or muddy boots were left in the home.
- The customer felt pushed toward a replacement they didn't want.

Replace everything in [brackets] and add one detail from the actual review before you post.
1. Price shock on an emergency call
Hi [Name], thank you for telling us how you felt about the bill. A burst pipe at [time] is stressful enough without a surprise at the end, and we should have walked you through our after-hours rate before starting, not after. That's on us. I'd like to go over the invoice with you line by line. Please call me directly at [phone] and ask for [Owner name]. – [Owner name], [Business]
2. Late arrival
Hi [Name], you're right: we told you [window] and arrived well after it, and nobody called to let you know. That isn't how we want to treat anyone. We've changed how our dispatcher updates customers when a job runs long. Thank you for the honest feedback, and I'm sorry for the wasted morning. – [Owner name]
3. The problem came back
Hi [Name], I'm sorry the [drain/leak] came back so soon after our visit. Any repair we make is covered by our [warranty period] workmanship guarantee, and we'd like to come back at no charge to find out why it didn't hold. Please call [phone] or reply here and we'll book the first available slot. – [Owner name], [Business]
4. Left a mess
Hi [Name], thank you for letting us know. Our techs are supposed to use drop cloths and shoe covers and leave the area cleaner than they found it, and that didn't happen at your home. I've spoken with the team about it. If anything was stained or damaged, please call me at [phone] and we'll make it right. – [Owner name]
5. Felt upsold
Hi [Name], thank you for the feedback. Our goal is to give you options, from the simple repair to a full replacement, and let you choose without pressure. I'm sorry it felt otherwise. If you'd like a second look at what the tech recommended, I'm happy to review the photos and notes with you myself. – [Owner name], [Business]
What not to say
- Don't argue about the price in public. Explain your pricing once, calmly, then take it offline.
- Don't name the technician or post the customer's address, invoice number or photos of their home.
- Don't copy and paste the same reply on every review. Add one real detail each time.
- Don't offer a discount or refund in exchange for changing or removing a review. Google's policies prohibit incentives for reviews.

Frequently asked questions
Should a plumber reply to every negative Google review?
Yes, ideally. A calm, specific reply shows future customers how you handle problems. Reply once, keep it short, and move the conversation to phone or email.
Can I get a negative review removed?
Only if it breaks Google's policies, for example if it's fake, off-topic, contains personal information or is from a conflict of interest. You can report it from your Business Profile. Being negative or unfair is not on its own a reason for removal.
Is it OK to offer a refund in exchange for removing a review?
No. Google's policies don't allow offering incentives in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review. You can still fix the problem. Just don't make it conditional on the review.
